|Swingate Cots Ltd was started in January 2012 following the birth of my daughter. I have suffered with back problems for a couple of years now and also fell ill shortly after giving birth. This left me with reactive arthritis.
This means that lifting and specifically lowering my daughter over the side of her cot was painful and could potentially cause further injury. To combat this, I modified my existing cot and the first prototype of the Swingate Cot was born. Following market research I realised there were few options available to parents in similar circumstances, unless they were prepared to pay premium prices for a completely bespoke cot. Other cots were designed for disabled children and failed to recognise the needs of parents suffering from physical difficulties.
People also commented that, although the design was initially created with disabled parents in mind, this cotbed could rival traditional cots as a common sense piece, aiding access to the child in the middle of the night when they wake and helping to prevent back problems.
Being predominantly housebound with my arthritis at the time and having always been an outdoors type of person, I was beginning to go stir-crazy, so I began my business carrying out extensive market research online. We're currently finalising designs and are waiting to receive our pre-production prototype and draft our patent.
